No. 1 Huskies Run Win-Streak to 10 With 3-0 Victory at SDSU
October 27, 2019 | Men's Soccer
SAN DIEGO --- Blake Bodily scored his first collegiate brace and Jaret Townsend added his career-best fifth goal of the season as No. 1 Washington cruised to a 3-0 win over San Diego State in a Pac-12 match on Sunday afternoon as the SDSU Sports Deck.
The Huskies improve to 14-1-0 and stay perfect in Pac-12 play at 7-0-0 with their 10th-straight win—their longest winning-streak since 1999. The Aztec drop to 3-10-1 and to 0-7-0 in the conference.
Washington was in control of the match from start to finish, though it would take until the second half before the Huskies pulled away. The Huskies held a commanding 24-4 shot advantage in the contest including a 15-3 edge in the second half.
Washington had several chances early including a shot by Charlie Ostrem which took a deflection and rattled off the right post and was cleared in the 38th minute. But after the ball was cleared to midfield, the Huskies came back on the attack with Lucas Meek getting a pass, taking it down the left side and sending a pass back toward the front of the goal where Jaret Townsend sent it home from right in front of the goal mouth.
It was the fifth goal of the season for Townsend, who has scored a goal in three of the last four matches for the Huskies. Meek has recorded an assist in three of UW's last four matches and now has three on the season.
After taking a one-goal lead to the break, the Huskies quickly added two more goals within the first six minutes of the second.
Gio Miglietti was taken down on the UW attack 27 yards from goal, setting a free kick for the Huskies. Bodily stepped up to take it and blasted a shot over the wall and into the upper right corner of the goal to make it 2-0 in the 48th minute.
Just three minutes later, the Aztec were whistled for a handball in the box, giving Washington a penalty kick. Bodily stepped up to take the spot kick and sent the ball to the upper left corner to make it a 3-0 Husky lead.
The Huskies get the full six points on their LA/SD trip for just the second time since SDSU joined the Pac-12 in 2005, last getting a pair of wins on the trip in 2017. Washington has now won six-straight matches against San Diego State, outscoring the Aztec 13-1 over that stretch.
Washington recorded its 11th shutout of the season, posting 11 or more for the 10th time in program history. The Huskies last had 11 shutouts in 2015 with the school record of 14 being matched three times, the last in 1982.
UW sits atop the Pac-12 men's soccer standings with 21 points while Oregon State—which also picked up wins on the Southern California road trip—sits in second with 13 points. Both teams have three matches to play while Stanford, which is now in third place with 10 points, still has five matches to play in conference play.
Washington takes a week off before returning to conference play by hosting California on Nov. 7 and Stanford on Nov. 10.
