Huskies Finish Sixth at Molly Collegiate
October 01, 2019 | Women's Golf
PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Washington women's golf team finished sixth overall in its second fall tournament of the year, the Molly Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday. The Dawgs went 34-over 898 (305-297-296) and improved in each round on the difficult Waverly Country Club course. The Huskies placed two student-athletes in the top 10 as both Karen Miyamoto and Alice Duan tied for ninth.
"It wasn't the finish that we wanted this week, however we feel like we gained a lot of valuable experience this week," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "It's important for our younger players to be exposed to golf courses of that caliber. We'll get back to work and continue to prepare hard this week. We're excited to get back home and play at Sahalee next week."
Miyamoto climbed five places during the final 18 on Tuesday as she recorded an even par 72 to finish at 6-over 222 (75-75-72). After opening the final round with back-to-back bogey's, Miyamoto closed strong going clean over the next 16 and capping the day with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole. It was the second-straight top 10 finish for the senior as she opened the season with a tournament win mid-September.
Her fellow senior Alice Duan also tied for ninth with a 6-over 222 (79-68-75). It was Duan's third top 10 finish as a Husky in her second season with the Dawgs. Just behind her and also making moves up the leaderboard on Tuesday was junior Rino Sasaki as she tied for 13th with an 8-over 224. Sasaki matched her opening round score of 1-over 73 on Tuesday thanks to two birdies and just three blemishes for her second-straight top 15 showing.
Freshman Brittany Kwon turned in her best scorecard of the event on Tuesday as she finished with 4-over 76 to climb four spots and finish tied for 28th at 14-over 230. Rounding out the UW crew was freshman Winnie Ng who was competing in her first tournament as a Dawg. Ng tied for 43rd at 18-over 234 (80-78-76) and improved upon her score in each round.
The Dawgs return to Seattle next week as they host the annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sahalee Golf Club, Tuesday-Wednesday, Oct. 8-9.
