Washington Heads to Nike Golf Collegiate Invite
September 29, 2018 | Men's Golf
SEATTLE – Fresh off its team title at the Husky Invitational, the University of Washington men's golf team hits the road to head to the prestigious Nike Golf Collegiate Invite hosted by TCU at the par 70, 7,204-yard Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The 15-team field features nine teams ranked in the most recent Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Top 25 Poll.
FROM COACH MURRAY: "Colonial is one of the great golf venues in America, so for our team to have the chance to compete on that championship level course against one of the strongest field is a real opportunity for us to continue to grow and improve. Playing on Bermuda grass will present a different kind of test around the greens but this is what we will continually face with our nationally competitive schedule. The team is coming off a good week with our win at the Husky Invitational so this will be a good chance for us to build on that momentum. I think we'll learn a lot about our team this week and the next few days will help our guys improve while learning more about themselves and their game."
THE FIELD: Washington will be joined by 14 other teams in Texas (Bushnell Golfweek Rankings): Georgia (2), USC (3), Oklahoma (4), Duke (7), Texas (9), TCU (20), Clemson (21), Stanford (23), Wake Forest (25), Arizona, Florida, Vanderbilt, Oregon and Ohio State.
THE LINEUP: The Huskies will play junior Henry Lee, freshman Robert Moran, sophomore Noah Woolsey, sophomore Jan Schneider and freshman Paul Margolis in the five-count-four event.
LAST TIME OUT: Washington earned its first team title since the 2015-16 season in its last event as it claimed a 16-stroke victory at the Husky Invitational. The Dawgs were led by three players in the top 10, highlighted by freshman Robert Moran who won his first individual title as a Husky. Moran posted a 1-under 212 (73-68-71) for the win. Sophomore Noah Woolsey tied for second with a 1-over 214 (73-70-71) while junior Henry Lee finished tied for ninth with a 7-over 200 (71-77-72).
FRESH ROSTER: Also most half of the Huskies roster for 2018-19 will be new to Montlake this season as the Dawgs welcome freshmen Paul Margolis (Cannes, France), Robert Moran (Dublin, Ireland), Ranveer Grewal (Ludhiana, India) and Padraic Sim (Spanish Fort, Alabama). The newcomers bring a wealth of international experience as three come to Seattle from outside of the country.
WHAT'S BACK: Junior Henry Lee and sophomore Noah Woolsey were second and third on the team in stroke average a year ago and return to lead the Huskies this season. Lee competed in 13 events including earning a spot at the NCAA Pacific Regional alongside Carl Yuan. He averaged a 72.37, posted two top 10 showings with his best being a sixth-place tie while also shooting under par in 15 of his 38 rounds. Woolsey averaged 72.91 in his 12 events and finished in the top two of the lineup for UW in six of those outings.
FALL SCHEDULE: Head coach Alan Murray didn't hold back when scheduling the Huskies fall slate as UW will traverse the country and play on some impressive courses against some of the top teams in the country. Along with the first tournament in Minnesota, which featured eight teams that competed at the NCAA Championships a year ago, Washington will play at the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country club in Texas and the Tavistock Collegiate at Isleworth Country Club in Florida. After a two-year hiatus, UW returns to hosting the Husky Invitational and welcoming some of the top teams in the region to the Aldarra Golf Club in Sammamish, Sept. 25-26. Closing the season, the team will play at the Royal Ka'anapali course in Hawaii for the first time.
HUSKIES IN THE PROS: Washington golf alumni have been very visible on the pro circuits this season with C.T. Pan currently sitting 33rd in the FedEx Cup rankings on the PGA Tour. He's posted two top 10 finishes this season with his best coming at the Wyndham Championship where he tied for second. He also tied for fourth at the Dell Technologies Championship. Alex Prugh again earned his PGA Card after solid showings on the Web.Com Tour while Corey Pereira has been strong on the Mackenzie Tour, recently winning his first title on the tour at the ATB Financial Classic. Carl Yuan, Nick Taylor, and eight other former Dawgs are also competing professionally.
