Dawgs in 14th After Round One at Nike Golf Collegiate Invite
September 30, 2018 | Men's Golf
FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of Washington men's golf team opened up the prestigious Nike Golf Collegiate Invite on Sunday with a 16-over 296, which has them placed 14th following round one at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. The 15-team field features nine teams ranked in the most recent GolfWeek Coaches Top 25 poll.
"Today wasn't our best day on the course, but it was a tough test," said head coach Alan Murray. "If you look at our scorecards, we didn't make enough birdies and had too many bogeys and overall didn't play well enough. Against this high quality of a field and on this course, it is hard to score without playing well."
Washington was led by freshman Paul Margolis who carded a 2-over 72 to sit tied for 27th. The newcomer's round started off clean with pars on his first seven holes. He got to 1-over with a blemish on hole 14 (his eighth of the day due to the shotgun start) but he responded quickly with four-straight pars. Margolis' two birdies of the day came on holes one and three mixed in with a trio of bogeys. His 2-over is six strokes off the lead, held by Vanderbilt's Mason Greenberg (4-under 66).
Just two strokes behind him is junior Henry Lee at 4-over 74. He's tied for 47th and also carded two birdies on the day. Sharing a tie for 55th is sophomores Noah Woolsey and Jan Schneider at 5-over 75 while freshman Robert Moran rounds out the UW contingent at 7-over 77.
"We'll get some practice in this afternoon and try to tidy up some areas for each of our guys to be ready to go tomorrow," added Murray. "Our team gave their all today on a tough course against a tough field and I believe will have learned a lot about their game. We'll be ready for tomorrow and are excited to get back out there and give it another go to see what we can do."
The Huskies will play 18 holes on Monday followed by Tuesday's final round of 18. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com.
