Huskies Earn Share of Team Title at Nittany Lion Invitational
September 23, 2018 | Women's Golf
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. – The University of Washington women's golf team got the 2018-19 season started on the right foot as it saved its best round for last en route to earning a tie for the team title at the Nittany Lion Invitational with a three-round score of even-par 864 (294-287-283). All five Huskies finished in the top 25 while two posted top-10 efforts. Washington shared the team title with host Penn State.
"Overall, it's tough to tie as we gave away too many shots down the stretch but I'm proud of how we competed as a whole this weekend in our first tournament of the year," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We saw improvement in each round and that's what you want to see the first time you get on the course in a season."
UW's top scorer of the event was junior newcomer Alice Duan who finished fourth with her score of 2-under 214 (75-71-68). Duan had a stellar start to the day making the turn at 2-under and adding another birdie on the par-4 11th hole to put her at 3-under. Her first error came on the 14th to bring her back one. Duan closed out the round with two more birdies for a round three total of 4-under 68, UW's best round of the tournament, giving Duan her first top 10 finish as a Husky.
Joining her in the top 10 was senior Sarah Rhee whose solid play carried over from Saturday's 36 holes as she finished with a 2-over 218 (73-73-72) to tie for seventh place. It's the eighth career top 10 finish for Rhee and sixth over her last eight tournaments dating back to last season. Like Duan, Rhee started the day strong, going clean with a 3-under up through the 14th and 15th holes where she recorded back-to-back bogeys. She responded quickly over her final three though to turn in her scorecard at even-par 72.
Senior Weyung Keh earned a tie for 12th place with her 3-over 219 (78-70-71). She made par on her first eight holes, added one birdie then went par-par again until her first blemish of the day came on the par-3 14th. Quickly bouncing back though, Keh added two more pars and a birdie to bring her total back to 1-under. The senior closed out the day with straight-pars to finish at 1-under 71 for back-to-back under-par rounds.
In the last scoring position for UW was junior Karen Miyamoto who's 4-over 220 (72-76-72) earned her 14th. The Husky had UW's most birdies in a round for the day as she carded five but a triple on hole 15 and two early blemishes set her score back to even par. Despite the result on the 15th, Miyamoto went 1-under over her next four holes to bring her back to even par and en route to her 13th place finish.
Fellow senior Julianne Alvarez, who was competing as an individual, also finished in the top 25 as she posted a 6-over 222 (76-70-76) for a 17th-place tie. Closing out the lineup was sophomore Rino Sasaki who placed tied for 23rd with a score of 8-over 224 (74-73-77). Also competing as individuals, joining Alvarez, were freshman Martha Lewis and sophomore Wenyan Ma who finished T58th and T65th, with scores of 17-over 233 (78-77-78) and 20-over 236 (81-76-79), respectively.
The Huskies return home to host the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, Oct. 9-10 at Sahalee Golf Course in Sammamish, Wash.
