October 09, 2018 | Women's Golf
SAMMAMISH, Wash. – The University of Washington women's golf team sits atop the leaderboard at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational following 36 holes on Tuesday at Sahalee Country Club. The Dawgs carded a 6-under 570 (286-284) to claim a 15-stroke leader over second-place Oregon State. Washington was led by senior Sarah Rhee who is in first place with a 6-under 138 (71-67). All five in scoring position for the Huskies will enter Wednesday's round in the top 20.
"Overall, our group had a solid day on a difficult course," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "This morning was tough weather wise, it was cold and wet, which just adds another level to the day but they battled through it and I was really pleased with how they played in the afternoon round. This is a tough course and we only counted one double in each round which is pretty good. We had a lot of players play some really good golf today. Sarah just continues to be steady and solid and it was nice to see Julianne, Rino and Martha have some strong play. We're excited to get back out there tomorrow and see what we can do."
Rhee posted back-to-back under-par rounds thanks to 10 total birdies on Tuesday led off by a 1-under 71 on her first 18. She started the day clean over her front nine before bogeying the 10th after the turn. The first of her 10 birdies on the day, which would come over her next 20 holes, started on the par 4 14th. She followed with another on the 15th and closed round one with one on the 18th.
Moving into the second round, Rhee continued her sound play finishing the front nine at three-under with no blemishes. She stayed clean for the next six holes following the turn, adding four more birdies to put her at 7-under before recording her first bogey of the round on the 16th. She erred on the par 3 17th to bring her back to 5-under which is how her round finish. It's a season low score for Rhee and it ties her career low as a Husky, matching the 67 she hit in the first round to the 2018 NCAA Tallahassee Regional.
Next on the scoreboard just three strokes back was sophomore Rino Sasaki who is tied for second at 3-under 141 (69-72). She was one of three Huskies to finish Tuesday without a round score above par. Her opening round 69 featured four birdies with just the one error. She followed with an even par 72 en route to her 3-under 141.
Senior Julianne Alvarez, playing at the top of the lineup, showcased a steady and solid day as she posted back-to-back scores of 72 for an even-par 144. Alvarez made par or birdie in 34 of the day's 36 holes with her 31 pars tying for the tournament lead.
In just her second tournament for UW, and competing as an individual so her score won't count towards the team total, was freshman Martha Lewis who is in seventh place following a 1-over 145 (74-71). Lewis had a strong start out of the gates making birdie on her first three holes but hit a little rough patch en route to her 3-over score for the round. She settled in though over her next 18 to finish with a 1-under 71. Junior Karen Miyamoto also competed as an individual and went 70-76 for a 2-over 146 to tie for eighth.
Senior Wenyung Keh and junior Alice Duan rounded out the UW lineup with Keh turning in a 3-over 147 (74-73), tying for 11th, and Duan posting a 5-over 149 (75-74) for an 18th place tie. The third Husky competing as an individual was sophomore Wenyan Ma and her 13-over 157 (79-78) places her tied for 54th.
The final 18 holes of the annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational will tee off at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning at Sahalee Country Club with live scoring available on golfstat.com
