Huskies Win Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational Crown

SAMMAMISH, Wash. --- The Washington women's golf team won its second-straight tournament title on Tuesday as it took home the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invititational crown on Wednesday shooting a 5-under 859 (286-284-289). The Huskies claimed the victory by 24 strokes over second place Oregon State. Senior Sarah Rhee earned the individual title, finishing the tournament at 8-under par.
"It's great to get another team win in the fall season and I thought we were patient and didn't try to force too much today," said head Mary Lou Mulflur. "We took our chances where it made sense and just stuck to our process, they did that really well. Sometimes this golf course can frustrate you. You can easily lose your patience and make a poor decision because you're trying to make something happen. I thought our team showed a lot of patience and discipline today."
The Huskies have now earned their second team victory in the first two events of the 2018 fall season, after opening the year finishing tied for first at the Nittany Lion Invitational.
Rhee won her first collegiate event as an individual, earning it in dramatic fashion as she birdied the last two holes to secure her one stroke victory. As Rhee went to the 18th hole, she was tied at 7-under par with Christine Danielsson of UC Davis.
Rhee proceeded to find the middle of the fairway, and then hit her driver off the deck to get on the green, 15 feet from the pin. She then two-putted to birdie the hole and clinch the victory.
"It was a thrilling way to finish," said Rhee. "I had some great saves on fourteen and fifteen, and then I made a pretty standard par on sixteen. At the end I was just hoping for a birdie putt and I knew it would go in. I had a feeling that I was close (throughout her final round). I wasn't playing my best golf on the first seven holes of my back nine. I felt like I was doing well on the front nine. I tried to stay really patient. I thought I made some great decisions and was able to execute them."
"She was incredible," said Mulflur on Rhee. "The shot she hit on seventeen was really pure. The shot to remember was on eighteen with the driver off the fairway. I don't think she truly knew where she stood, but she certainly knew she was in it. That was a masterful golf shot, I'm really proud of her. She's been working so hard and to see her with the way she's playing and the way she has matured from a freshman until now is so much fun to see. Her teammates are genuinely excited for her, they all love each other and it makes it fun to be around people who truly care about each other."
Washington had five players finish inside the top-10, and were also the only team in the event to finish the tournament under par.
Senior Julianne Alvarez finished tied for third place, shooting an even par 216, after carding a 72 in all three rounds to earn her first top-10 finish of the season. Sophomore Rino Sasaki also tied for third, finishing the tournament at even par after shooting a 3-over round of 75 in her final round. The third place finish is Sasaki's first top-10 of the season and the fourth in her Husky career. Senior Wenyung Keh finished the tournament at 3-over par, earning a tie for ninth place. Keh shot an even par 72 in her final round, and her top-10 finish was the first of her senior season.
Freshman Martha Lewis, playing as an individual finished the tournament at 3-over par, which put her in a tie for ninth place. Lewis earned the first career top-10 finish of her Husky career. Junior Karen Miyamoto, playing as an individual, completed the event at 7-over par, where she finished tied for 15th place. Junior Alice Duan tied for 26th place at 12-over par after carding a 7-over par round of 79 in the third round. Sophomore Wenyan Ma playing as an individual, finished the tournament at 18-over par, tying for 47th place.
The Huskies will next be in action at the Stanford Invitational, on Oct. 19-21.
