The WAC/101 Club Cup: The Story Behind The Cup
September 19, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- On Sunday, the No. 16 Washington Huskies hosts the Redhawks of Seattle University in the third annual WAC 101 Club Cup at 5:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium The Washington Athletic Club sponsors the cup with the winning team receiving a donation to its soccer program from the WAC.
"The WAC and 101 Club care a lot about youth and amateur sports and do a lot for both throughout the Seattle area," said UW Head Coach Jamie Clark. "The fact they have chosen this game as a marquee event means a lot to us. Their support is a big positive. We want this match to be the community game and their support helps it to really become 'Seattle's game'."
Both programs have ties to the WAC and the 101 Club, which made for an easy choice for the group to sponsor the cup.
"Seattle University coach Peter Fewing is a member at the WAC, we have many former student-athletes who are members, and the WAC is very UW centric," said John Buller, Executive Director of the 101 Club. "With Seattle U and UW playing each other in soccer on an annual basis, we thought we would put together a cup with the winner getting scholarship money. The scholarship money is donated to the team of the winning side with its purpose for the soccer program."
The cup's beginning can be traced to the WAC's mission of supporting amateur athletics.
"The idea of the cup started with the nature of the WAC, 88 years in existence," said Buller. "One of the club's founding principles was supporting amateur athletics. The reason the cup started is at the root is what the WAC and its members support: amateur athletics."
"The idea (for the cup) got passed around and it fits our mission of the WAC supporting amateur athletics," said Buller. "We liked the idea of there being energy around the game of an annual cup with Seattle U and UW."
The 2018 matchup between the two schools will be the third version of the WAC/101 Club Cup. The Huskies have hoisted the cup in each of the last two years, downing Seattle U 2-1 in 2016 on Montlake and earning a 2-0 shutout at Seattle U in 2017.
Fans are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance as the crowd is expected to push capacity on Sunday afternoon. Visit http://gohuskies.com/MSocTickets for more information.
