Huskies Finish Off Fifth Pac-12 Sweep With 5-3 Win Over Oregon State
May 06, 2018 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The #5 Washington Huskies finished the regular season with a 5-3 win over Oregon State, wrapping up a series sweep with their 44th win of the season. Washington put four runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back. Both Taylor Van Zee and Nawai Kaupe homered in the game. The Huskies have a 44-8 record now with postseason play up next.
Samantha Manti threw two scoreless innings to start the game for Washington, striking out two while the Huskies built an early lead. It was Manti's third consecutive scoreless appearance. Taran Alvelo would work two innings of relief before Gabbie Plain took over. Plain struck out four in three scoreless innings for her third win of the weekend.
After the first two batters went out in the first inning, Washington strung together five straight hits to jump to a 4-0 lead. Julia DePonte started the rally with a double down the leftfield line, then scored when Kirstyn Thomas dropped a single just in front of a diving rightfielder.
Thomas, who would steal second on the next pitch, then came around to score when Noelle Hee dropped a single in the same place. Kaupe's home run to right-center put two more runs on the board to put the Huskies up 4-0.
Oregon State threatened in the second with three straight singles, loading the bases with no outs. Manti wasn't fazed, however, and retired the next three batters without a run coming across the plate, getting a popup, a force at home, and a strikeout looking to keep Oregon State off the board.
Oregon State would score one run on a passed ball in the third, then add two more in the fourth with a bases-load walk and a sacrifice fly.
Van Zee added to Washington's lead with her eighth home run in the top of the fourth, setting a new single-season high with a shot to rightfield.
Oregon State's last threat came in the sixth with tow infield singles to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Sis Bates got the lead runner at third, faking a throw to first before firing to Van Zee for the out. Bates would then make a leaping grab to end the inning.
Plain finished off her day with a 1-2-3 seventh, striking out two to secure Washington's win.
