Washington Readies For NCAA Regional Matchups
May 14, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - The #5 Washington Huskies will play host to the NCAA Regionals this weekend, beginning with a matchup against the Boise State Broncos on Friday, May 18 at 8:30 pm. Texas and Minnesota will also be playing in the Seattle Regional and will face off on Friday at 6:00 pm. All games in the Regional will be aired on the ESPN family of networks.
Washington, which finished the season 44-8 and undefeated in non-conference play, is the nation's fifth overall seed. This is the third year in a row and eighth time in the last nine years Washington has hosted Regionals. It is also the second year in a row that the Huskies will host Super Regionals. Last year, Washington hosted both en route to its 12th Women's College World Series appearances.
The Huskies earned 11 year-end awards from the Pac-12 Conference before postseason play began, including a Defensive Player of the Year award for Sis Bates. Bates, Taran Alvelo, Julia DePonte, Gabbie Plain, and Taylor Van Zee were all named to the All-Pac-12 First Team, with the five First Team awards the most the Huskies have ever won in a single season. Kelly Burdick and Kirstyn Thomas also earned awards from the Pac-12.
Boise State went 40-14 this season en route to winning the Mountain West Conference title. Washington has not faced Boise State, the fourth seed at the Seattle Regional, since 2016, when the Huskies won 12-1 in five innings at the Husky Classic. The two teams have never faced in the postseason.
Minnesota, the region's two seed, won the Big Ten conference for the third consecutive year. The Golden Gophers went 39-15 overall, including a 14-10 mark on the road. Last season, Minnesota came to Seattle for the Husky Classic, losing both games to Washington by scores of 3-2 and 9-0 in five innings. Minnesota also came to Seattle for the 2016 NCAA Regionals, where they fell to the Huskies twice.
Texas, the three seed in Seattle, faced off with Washington earlier this year in Austin, with the Huskies winning 2-1. Washington leads the series between the two teams 5-2 over the last decade and have not lost to Texas since 2013. Texas went 32-24 this season, taking third place in the Big 12 Tournament with a 9-2 win over Texas Tech.
