Patience At The Plate Helps Huskies Win 8-0 Over Boise State
May 18, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – The #5 Washington Huskies started NCAA Regionals with a run-rule victory over Boise State, winning 8-0 in five innings. Washington drew a season-high ten walks in the game, exploding for seven runs in the final two innings of the game.
Gabbie Plain struck out six batters to earn her 17th win and eighth shutout of the year. Plain struck out the leadoff batter in the first and second innings.
The first run for the Huskies came in the second on a bases-loaded walk, one of two RBI walks in the game. Taylor Van Zee put the Huskies ahead, pushing Emma Helm home, who had started the inning with a walk.
Boise State threatened in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with one out. Plain settled down immediately as the freshman struck out the next batter on four pitches. A routine grounder to Van Zee put an end to Boise State's best scoring threat of the day and kept the 1-0 lead intact.
The momentum from the defensive stop carried over to the offense, with Washington scoring four times to push the lead to 5-2. Taryn Atlee drew a leadoff walk and would come around to score on a grounder by Taylor Van Zee to stretch the lead to 2-0.
After a sacrifice fly to center from Sis Bates, back-to-back singles by Kirstyn Thomas and Emma Helm stretched the lead to 5-0.
Singles by Kelly Burdick and Julia DePonte stretched the lead to 7-0 in the fifth as Washington put eight batters in a row on base to end the game. Helm's walk with the bases loaded made it an eight-run lead, giving Washington the win.
