Two RBI Doubles Carry Huskies Into Regionals Championship Game
May 19, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE โ The #5 Washington Huskies advanced to the championship round of NCAA Regionals with a 2-1 win over the Texas Longhorns, allowing only two hits all game to move to 46-8 on the season. RBI doubles by Julia DePonte and Kirstyn Thomas carried the Huskies to the win and a chance to advance to Super Regionals tomorrow.
Gabbie Plain threw another complete game while earning her 18th win of the year. Plain gave up an RBI double in the second, then did not allow a hit or walk for the rest of the game, retiring 15 of the final 17 batters. Plain picked up six strikeouts in the game and walked only one.
After allowing a run to score on a double in the second, Plain immediately retired six batters in a row to take control of the game once again.
Washington threatened continually, drawing three walks in the first and putting two on in the fourth, before breaking through in the fifth. Two doubles to deep center tied the game 1-1. Taylor Van Zee fired a shot off the bat over the centerfielder's head to leadoff the fifth with a double. DePonte then hit a ball off the top of the centerfield wall that tied the game and chased Texas' starter.
Texas' best chance after that came in the sixth, when the Longhorns led off with a baserunner reaching via error. Plain responded with two swinging strikeouts and an easy popup to kill any chance at a run.
Washington's very next batter put the pressure on, with Sis Bates doubling high off the rightfield wall leading off the seventh. Two batters later, Thomas ripped a ball down the leftfield line to give the Huskies the first lead of the game. A 1-2-3 final frame from Plain wrapped up the win.
