Huskies Make NCAA Statement By Sweeping Utes
May 19, 2018 | Baseball
The win improved the Huskies to 28-22 overall and 18-9 in Pac-12 play. The Huskies are ensured of ending the weekend no worse than third in the conference standings.
No Pac-12 team eligible for post-season play has been left out of the tournament with 18 wins on their Conference resume.
Every UW starter had at least one hit and Nick Kahle led the Huskies' offensive charge with five runs batted in, including his third home run of the season, and a 2-for-5 day.
Levi Jordan equaled a career high with four hits (4-for-6, 2 RBI) and three other Huskies recorded three hits.
For the second-straight game, the Huskies scored in the first inning, but this time the Utes answered right back. Jordan got the Huskies on the board with a RBI single off Josh Lapiana that scored Braiden Ward, and AJ Graffanino followed with a single of his own that scored Kahle for a 2-0 lead.
It was a short-lived lead, though, as the first three Utah batters reached on hits to tie the game, 2-2. After DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and Oliver Dunn opened the inning with back-to-back singles, Rykker Tom hit a double into the gap that scored both of them.
Washington responded right back with a two-run, second inning to go ahead 4-2. The Huskies loaded the bases with one out and Utah looked like they were going to get out of the inning when Kahle hit a routine ground ball to shortstop for a tailor-made double play. But, Dunn dropped the ball at second base allowing everyone to reach safely and allowing Jonathan Schiffer to score from third.
Joe Wainhouse followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Mason Cerrillo to pick up his team-high 48th RBI of the season.
Utah got a run back in the fourth on a triple by Chandler Anderson, followed by a sacrifice fly by Dominic Foscalina to close to within one run, but Washington got a pair of runs in the fifth to extend its lead back to three.
After Wainhouse walked to start the fifth, Graffanino tripled past a diving Keirsey Jr. in left-center field. One batter later, Willie MacIver hit a sacrifice fly to right that drove home Graffanino and made the score 6-3.
Utah answered back once again, this time with two runs in the fifth, but the Huskies once again put crooked numbers on the board the next inning to take a four run lead. Kahle provided three runs with one swing of the bat as he was green lighted with a 3-0 count and took Josh Lapiana's pitch onto the grassy berm in left-center field for his third home run of the season. Ward and Schiffer scored ahead of Kahle to give the Huskies a 9-5 lead.
The Utes scored two more in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-7, but Washington got a run back in the eighth to go back up three. MacIver picked up his second RBI of the game with a two-out infield single that scored Jordan, who earlier picked up his third hit of the game.
The Dawgs iced the game with three more runs in the ninth for the final 13-7 margin.
Stevie Emanuels pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn his seventh win of the season and Alex Hardy threw three scoreless innings to finish the game and earn his sixth save.
The Huskies return home for their final home stand of 2018 with a three-game series against No. 3 Stanford. The series starts Thursday and runs through Saturday, a game in which the Huskies will honor their five seniors.
