Plain Throws Seventh Perfect Game In UW History
April 07, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – Gabbie Plain threw the seventh perfect game in Husky history and second ever by a freshman as the #1 Washington Huskies defeated Utah 12-0 Saturday. Plain retired all 15 batters she faced, with only two balls reaching the outfield all game. Washington is now 38-2 on the season, tying their best record ever through 40 games, set in 2000.
Plain twice came out after long waits on the bench, first after a seven-run inning by the Huskies in the second and then after a rain delay and four runs by the Huskies in the fourth. The Australian struck out the first two batters she faced after that big second inning, then retired three in a row to complete the perfect game after the rain delay.
Washington's scoring began with a big one-out rally in the second. Noelle Hee and Taryn Atlee each drew four-pitch walks, with the first run coming across on a Kelly Burdick single. Burdick would steal second, one of her two steals in the game, then come around to score when Julia DePonte hit a three-run triple with the bases loaded.
Emma Helm would also drive in a run in the inning with a line-drive single to right.
Helm drew a walk in the fourth after a 15-minute rain delay as part of Washington's second big rally. Kaija Gibson, who had pinch-run earlier in the day, blasted a triple into center to score Helm and Trysten Melhart, then came around to score herself on a single by Van Zee. Kirstyn Thomas's RBI walk would put the final run on the board.
Plain made a dramatic play to seal the perfect game. The freshman knocked down a line drive back at her with two outs in the fifth. Plain then located the ball behind her and fired a bullet to first base just in time for the out. That was also the only inning in which Plain did not strike out a batter all day.
