Huskies Return Home With Six-Game Win Streak
April 02, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - The #1 Washington Huskies start a two-week homestand this week, fresh off a series sweep of the Stanford Cardinal last weekend. Washington will host Seattle U on Wednesday, April 4 at 5:00 pm in the season's final non-conference game before the Utah Utes come to town for a three-game series, beginning Friday, April 6 at 5:00 pm. Tickets for all home games are available online.
The Huskies have a six-game winning streak after series sweeps of #9 Arizona and Stanford over the last two weeks, carrying Washington to a 7-2 Pac-12 record, good for second in the conference. Those back-to-back sweeps were the first for Washington in Pac-12 play since 2013, when the Huskies beat UCLA and Oregon State in back-to-back series. The 7-2 start in Pac-12 play this year is Washington's best since 2000, when they began 8-1.
The Huskies broke 300 strikeouts on the year during the Stanford series, marking the second time in the last eight years Washington has struck out at least 300 batters in a season. With five more strikeouts by Gabbie Plain, Washington would have its first duo with 100+ strikeouts each since 2014.
Washington also picked up its 16th and 17th shutouts of the year against Stanford. The Huskies' team ERA of 0.88 leads the conference and is second in the nation.
The Seattle Redhawks are 24-16 this year after winning two of three over Utah Valley this last weekend. Seattle includes the national leader in home runs in Madison Cathcart, who has hit 17 in 40 games so far. The Redhawks have never defeated Washington, with the Huskies winning all 13 matchups over the series history. Last season, Washington triumphed 3-1.
The Utah Utes will enter this weekend's matchup 17-15 on the year after being swept by #3 UCLA. Utah has begun 2-7 in Pac-12 play, having been swept by UCLA and #9 Arizona while taking two of three from Stanford. Since Utah entered the Pac-12 in 2012, Washington holds a 14-5 edge in the series. The two teams also met in the NCAA Super Regionals last year, with Washington winning two of three games to advance to the Women's College World Series.
