Alvelo One-Hits Utah In Series-Opening 5-0 Win
April 06, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – Behind another dominant performance in the circle, the #1 Washington Huskies record their seventh straight Pac-12 win, defeating Utah 5-0 in game one of this weekend's series. Taran Alvelo allowed only one hit all game in recording her 19th win. Taylor Van Zee and Sis Bates each reached base three times, scoring three runs between them. Washington is now 37-2 this year and 8-2 in the Pac-12.
Alvelo did not allow a hit until the first batter of the seventh inning when Utah managed a bloop single to right. The junior would strike out seven in the game while allowing just two baserunners, the fifth time this year she has allowed two or fewer baserunners in a start.
Alvelo retired 15 in a row at one point and ended the game with two strikeouts in the seventh. Only three balls left the infield all game, only two of which were in fair ground.
Washington put the first run on the board in the first inning, taking the lead for good just four batters in. Sis Bates was the first to reach base, drawing one of her two walks in the game. Bates would advance to third on a Kirstyn Thomas single. Bates then scored on a groundout by Julia DePonte. Bates crept down the line, exploding toward home as soon as the catcher threw the short grounder to first, then scored standing up before Utah could throw back.
Utah's first baserunner came via a walk in the second inning. Alvelo mowed down batters the rest of the way, striking out the last two batters of that inning on seven total pitches.
The Huskies twice scored on wild pitches, adding a run in the third and fourth. Van Zee drove in another run in the fourth with a hard double high off the centerfield wall that scored Kelly Burdick, who had singled one batter earlier.
Washington's final run came from a two-out rally in the sixth. Burdick and Van Zee reached via walk, with Burdick fighting back from an 0-2 hole. Bates then roped a single into right, allowing Burdick to score from second and make it 5-0.
