Cougars Snap Husky Dual Meet Win Streak
April 28, 2018 | Track & Field
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State broke the Husky winning streak on both sides of the storied UW-WSU Dual Meet today on the Cougars' Mooberry Track, in spite of a solid effort form the Dawgs that saw numerous career-best efforts. The Cougars had an 88-75 victory on the women's side and an 89-74 men's win to get their first Dual Meet sweep since 2010.
Washington won 17 events overall including 12 of the 22 track events, but the Cougars won 11 of the 16 field events and had four events where they swept the top three scoring spots, compared to two sweeps for the Dawgs, in the women's shot put and men's 5,000-meters.
Multiple winners for UW today included Gina Flint, who went 8-for-8 in Dual Meet events for her career as she swept the shot put and discus on the women's side, and freshman Jonah Wilson who won both events on the men's side in his first Dual. Freshmen Evan Mafilas and Devan Kirk both had individual wins and teamed up for the 4x400m relay win, while senior Carolyn Birkenfeld also won the open 400m and ran on the winning 4x4.
"Credit to the Cougars for competing with a lot of spirit today and it does not feel great to have our winning streak come to an end but it wasn't for a lack of effort as I thought our kids battled," said Head Coach Greg Metcalf. "There were a number of races where points swung on literally a hundredth or thousandth of a second and they got a few more of those today than we did.
"We are missing a handful of pieces to our team who we would have liked to see out here today, but many of our athletes had the best day of their seasons today or in some cases of their careers and that's encouraging going into Pac-12s."

Women's Events
In the short sprints, Olivia Ribera picked up a point in the 100-meters in 12.08 seconds, getting edged out by just .01 for second-place. Iman Brown turned in a dominant win in the 200-meters in 24.09 while Ribera was fourth in 24.90.
One of the best finishes was the win for senior Carolyn Birkenfeld in her final Dual, as she was nearly caught by WSU's Stephanie Cho but Birkenfeld wouldn't let that happen as she leaned and fell over the finish to win in 55.26 seconds ahead of Cho's 55.35. Sarah Stavig also returned to action and finished third in 56.92.
More wins came for the Dawgs in the mid-distances as Hannah Derby led wire-to-wire in the 800-meters to win in 2:07.97. In the 5k, Kaitlyn Neal placed second in 16:45.97 and Schadler doubled back from her 1,500-meter win to take third.

Flint won the shot put with a season-best 49-10 ½, leading a 1-2-3 sweep for the Dawgs in the event, the only UW women's sweep. Angel Nkwonta was second at 46-4 ¼ and Hannah Rusnak took third at 40-10 ½, both season-bests. Flint then won the discus as well with a throw of 158-10.
