Huskies Crush Cougars, 15-2, To Open Boeing Apple Cup Series
April 27, 2018 | Baseball
ย
Everyone in the Huskies' (19-18, 10-6 Pac-12) starting lineup contributed to the onslaught, either scoring a run or picking up a RBI. UW pounded out 16 hits and had a pair of five run innings โ in the third and fifth โ for their biggest offensive outing of the season.ย
ย
Pitcher Lucas Knowles (3-4) was the benefactor of the outpouring of run support. He equaled a career-high with six strikeouts and went 6 2/3 innings to pick up his third win. The only runs he allowed came in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Justin Harrer.
ย
The Huskies had Cougars' starter Isaac Mullins (0-5) on the ropes from the get go. Former Cougar Mason Cerrillo walked to start the game and later came around to score on a two-out, infield single by Willie MacIver.
ย
In the third, UW would send nine batters to the plate and collect six hits to expand its lead to 6-0. The first run scored on a squeeze bunt by Jonathan Schiffer, but after that the Huskies strung together five-straight hits. Christian Jones pushed one run across the board on a single, Braiden Ward doubled home a run and Cerrillo doubled home two more.
ย
Washington State got a pair of runs back in the fourth inning on Harrer's home run, but Joe Wainhouse countered with a blast of his own in bottom of the inning. After Nick Kahle singled off Mullins, chasing him from the game, Wainhouse took a 1-1 pitch from Michael Newstrom and drove it high into the night sky and over the left-center wall for his team-leading sixth home run.
ย
Kahle made the score 9-2 with a RBI double in the fifth inning and the Huskies scored five more in the sixth on just two hits. Two Cougar pitchers walked five batters and hit another as UW sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning.
ย
Washington scored its 15th run on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning, the last inning that the Huskies would score. The Dawgs ended up scoring in every inning they batted except for the second and eighth.
ย
Seven different Huskies recorded multi-hit games, led by Cerrillo and Kahle, who recorded similar lines, each going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
ย
The Huskies and Cougars continue their series on Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The game will be carried on the Pac-12 Network.
