Washington Hosts #2 Oregon In Last Regular Season Home Series
April 24, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - In the last home series of the regular season, the #4 Washington Huskies will host the #2 Oregon Ducks for three games, beginning Friday, April 27. Washington will have its annual Fan Fest and Senior Day on Sunday, April 29. The Huskies will look to return to their winnings ways after dropping three games to new-#1 team UCLA in Los Angeles last weekend. Washington has been ranked in the top five every week this season, with this series marking the first time Washington has faced a higher-ranked team.
Fan Fest will take place at noon on Sunday, one hour before the final game of the Washington-Oregon series. The event will include a petting zoo, bouncy house, speed pitch, and many other activities for fans. There will also be a tailgate outside the stadium.
Construction on I-5 will also lead to two lanes being closed between the West Seattle Bridge and SR 520 this weekend. More information on lane closures is available online.
Washington will honor six seniors this weekend, celebrating Kelly Burdick, Kristin Cochran, Julia DePonte, Trysten Melhart, Kirstyn Thomas, and Taylor Van Zee. Those six have led the Huskies throughout their time at Washington, advancing to the Women's College World Series last year and pushing the Huskies to nine weeks as the nation's top-ranked team this season. These seniors have etched their names into the Husky record books individually as well, with at least one ranking in the program's top ten in runs, RBI, doubles, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and batting average.
Washington is one of three teams in the nation to rank in the top ten in fielding percentage (.982), runs per game (6.52), and ERA (0.97), a mark also reached by only Oklahoma and Florida. The Huskies are leading the nation in ERA as the only team with a sub-1.00 team mark. Taran Alvelo and Gabbie Plain are two of the five pitchers in the Pac-12 with ERAs below 1.00: Oregon also features two of those five in Megan Kleist and Miranda Elish.
Alvelo allowed multiple runs to score for just the fourth time all season last weekend. Alvelo, who leads the Pac-12 in wins and opposing batting average and is third in strikeouts, has a 0.50 ERA in the following games, striking out 40 while allowing just ten hits in those four starts. Only three times this year have consecutive opponents scored against Alvelo, who now has nine shutouts on the season, the most since Danielle Lawrie in 2010.
Last season, the Huskies won the series against Oregon, taking two of three games. The Huskies have a 24-14 record against Oregon in Seattle and lead the all-time series 52-28. Washington also defeated Oregon in the Women's College Series last year en route to a third-place finish nationally.
