Huskies Fall In Extras To #2 Oregon
April 27, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – For the first time this season, the #4 Washington Huskies lost at home, falling 7-2 in extra innings to the #2 Oregon Ducks. The game was knotted 2-2 from the sixth inning on before five runs in the ninth gave Oregon the win. Washington is 41-6 on the year now.
Taran Alvelo took the loss, dropping her season record to 21-4. Alvelo managed eight strikeouts in her nine innings, getting her 22nd complete game in 23 starts this season.
Singles by Taryn Atlee and Trysten Melhart in the third gave the Huskies an early lead. Atlee stole second after her single, then scored on Melhart's 150th career hit, a single to left-center.
Oregon threatened in the fourth with a double down the leftfield line. Alvelo wasn't fazed though, striking out the next two batters swinging to end the inning.
The Ducks scored twice in the fifth after a pair of fielder's choices resulted in no outs. Kelly Burdick nearly ended the inning after one run, making a catch in center and firing a rocket to second base to try and get the runner there. The throw arrived just late, with the runner on third scoring.
Washington responded immediately. Sis Bates doubled over the centerfielder's head with one out in the fifth, then took third on a groundout. On an 0-2 count, the ball bounded away from the catcher, allowing Bates to race home and tie in 2-2.
Both teams put the winning run on in the eighth but couldn't score. After a leadoff single, Emma Helm gunned down Oregon trying to score to kill the visitor's threat. Julia DePonte singled in the bottom half and moved into scoring position with two outs but was stranded.
A throwing error in the ninth gave Oregon a 3-2 lead. After a bunt hit, Oregon hit a home run to make it 7-2.
