Miscues Cost Huskies In 4-2 Loss To #2 Oregon
April 28, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – The #4 Washington Huskies fell 4-2 to the #2 Oregon Ducks Saturday, dropping the second game of the series. Julia DePonte hit her career-high 12th home run of the season in the first inning to spot the Huskies an early 2-1 lead but miscues in the field cost them. Washington falls to 41-7 on the season and 12-7 in Pac-12 play.
Gabbie Plain struck out five in the first two innings of the game but took her third loss of the season. Plain would allow only two earned runs while striking out nine in her seven innings.
After Oregon scored on a fielder's choice early, Plain rebounded with two straight strikeouts, ending the first with no more damage. She would strike out the side in that inning.
The Oregon lead was short-lived, with DePonte ripping a line drive toward the leftfield foul pole for a two-run homer in the bottom half of the first. Sis Bates, who had reached on a beautiful bunt that died on the foul line while Oregon waited for it to roll foul, came around to score on the play as well.
After an error put a runner on in the fourth, Oregon homered to take a 3-2 lead. Plain rebounded well after that, retiring the side in order in the fifth.
The Huskies came close to tying the game in both the sixth and seventh after Oregon added a run on a fielding error to make it 4-2. After a leadoff walk by Emma Helm, Noelle Hee ripped a hot line drive that looked ticketed for extra bases. Unfortunately, the liner was just within reach of the third baseman, starting a double play on the lineout.
In the seventh, Kelly Burdick and Taylor Van Zee each managed two-out infield singles. That final hit was just out of Washington's reach, however, with a foulout ending the game in Oregon's favor.
