Washington Falls 1-0 In Nailbiter Despite Alvelo's Excellence
April 22, 2018 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – Despite a dominating performance by Taran Alvelo, the #1 Washington Huskies fell 1-0 in the series finale to the #3 UCLA Bruins Sunday. Washington falls to 41-5 on the season and will return home next weekend for a three-game series against Oregon.
Alvelo allowed only one runner to reach scoring position all game but took the loss, just her third this year. The junior struck out five in her six innings of work and fell behind in the count only two times in the first five innings.
The Huskies put the leadoff runner on in each of the first three innings but could not score. Sis Bates and Kelly Burdick had bunt singles in the first two innings, with Burdick stealing second to move into scoring position.
UCLA did not have a hit until one out in the third. Alvelo immediately forced a double play from there, grabbing a grounder to start the 1-6-3 GDP.
UCLA's only run came after a long discussion between the umpires and UCLA coach. The Bruins would knock a bloop single to right after that, scoring the game's only run. Trysten Melhart would gun down a UCLA baserunner trying to advance to third on that same play but the run scored just before the out was recorded to make it 1-0.
Alvelo was near perfect for the rest of the game. She fell behind only seven times all game and had just three three-ball counts on the day.
The Huskies would put the tying run on in the sixth inning but could not push a run across, taking the loss.
