SEATTLE – The University of Washington women's golf team starts its postseason run this week at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, hosted by the Huskies at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle. The tournament, which is in its 32nd year, will be held Sunday-Tuesday, April 22-24. Washington will be paired with Arizona State in the first of three rounds and will tee off at 9:40 a.m. on the 10th hole Sunday morning. Admission to the Pac-12 Championships is free.
The Pac-12 has consistently had one of the best conferences in the nation this season as seven teams are ranked in the top 25 – No. 1 UCLA, No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 USC, No. 9 Arizona, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 15 Washington and No. 25 Colorado.
The Huskies are hosting the Pac-12 Championships for the first time since 2006 as the league tournament rotates between all 11 schools.
Washington will send junior Wenyung Keh (1), freshman Rino Sasaki (2), junior Sarah Rhee (3), sophomore Karen Miyamoto (4) and junior Julianne Alvarez (5).
On the Upswing
The Huskies made a strong push over the final six tournaments of the spring side of the season, finishing no less than fifth while also taking one team crown and posting two top two showings. After finishing fifth at the Bruin Wave Invitational (Feb. 26-27), Washington went on to win the weather-shortened Meadow Club Collegiate with a 3-under 573 (283-290). After a fifth place finish at the El Tigre Invitational, UW carded an 8-under 856, its best 54-hole score of the season) to finish second at the PING/ASU Invitational. The Huskies closed the season with 17-over 593 at the Buckeye Invite.
Last Year at the Pac-12 Championships
At the 2017 Pac-12 Championships, the Huskies posted a seventh place finish carding 37-over 901. Washington was led by Julianne Alvarez as she tied for ninth, registering her second top 10 finish of the year. Alvarez climbed two spots on the leaderboard during her final round en route to a 5-over 221 (78-70-73). Wenyung Keh also finished in the top 25 as she tied for 22nd with a 12-over 223. Keh has finished the top 25 in the two Pac-12 Championships she has competed in.
Keh on a Roll
Junior Wenyung Keh has been a primary part of the lineup in all three seasons as a Husky and this year she continued her stellar play as she did not finish outside of the top 25 in any of the eight events she competed in. The junior recorded a team-beset four top 10 finishes and knocked in five rounds under par. She leads the team with a 72.85 stroke average and finished either first or second in UW's lineup in all but two events.
Freshman Sasaki Stepping Up
Freshman Rino Sasaki wasted no time making an impact in her first year as a Husky as she has finished in the top 25 six times in 10 events, recorded three top 10 showings and had a team-best six rounds under-par. Her best showing was recent as she posted a tie for sixth at the PING/ASU Invitational with her 3-under 213, her best 54-hole score of the year.
National Championship Experience
The Huskies lineup still features three members of the 2016 NCAA National Championship squad in juniors Sarah Rhee, Julianne Alvarez and Wenyung Keh. The trio were freshman when Washington made history and all three contributed to UW's victory in match play. Since their freshman season, the trio have combined for 24 top 10 finishes, nine during their freshman campaign, six last season and nine once again this year.
