Rhee Tied For First After Day One of Pac-12 Championships
April 22, 2018 | Women's Golf
SEATTLE – University of Washington junior Sarah Rhee sits in a tie for first to lead the Huskies on day one of the 2018 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships as she shot a season-best tying 4-under 68. The Huskies as a team sit in sixth place with a 5-over 293, which is just six strokes off the team lead held by UCLA (1-under 287).
"Overall, I think we started the day a little nervous and just maybe overly excited since we are playing on one of our home courses with a lot of people out supporting us so we got off to a bit of a rough start and that's going to happen sometimes in those kind of situations," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Once they settled down, they got into a pretty solid groove. The three juniors were solid at the top of the lineup and really it's still anybody's game. Hopefully tomorrow, we come out a little more settled and relaxed."
Rhee is tied for the individual lead with UCLA's Lilia Vu and Stanford's Emily Wang with her score of 68 which also ties here low round of the season. In her last two tournaments, Rhee has carded opening rounds of 4-under 68. Additionally, her score ties the Broadmoor Women's Competitive course record.
She opened the day with a bogey on her first hole but went back to even par thanks to her first birdie of the round on the par-4 third hole. The junior followed that was another birdie on the fourth hole to put her under par where she would stay for the rest of the day. After making the turn at two under, Rhee carded two more birdies over her second nine holes en route to her 4-under.
"Sarah played outstanding today and to do it in her home town in front of family and friends, is just a really neat story," added Mulflur. "She's such a tough competitor and for her to be at the point of almost not playing this morning to then shooting a 4-under just shows that. Over the last month or s, Sarah has really taken her game up a notch and is just playing really dialed in golf."
Junior Wenyung Keh followed Rhee on the leaderboard with her 1-over 73 to place her tied for 14th. Despite posting one birdie over her first nine holes, Keh ended up making the turn at two over due to a trio of blemishes. She responded on her second nine after putting together a string of three-straight birdies on holes five six and seven to finish at 1-over.
Fellow junior Julianne Alvarez also finished the round better than she started as she went 1-over with two birdies over her final nine holes in round one to card a 3-over 75 score for a 27th-place tie. Freshman Rino Sasaki and sophomore Karen Miyamoto will each enter the second round 5-over 77 which places them tied for 37th.
The Huskies start day two of the 2018 Pac-12 Championships at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 22 at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle. The Huskies will be paired with Colorado and admission is free to the course for fans who want to come out and support the Dawgs.
