UW Places Two in Top 15 Heading into Final Round of Pac-12 Championships
April 23, 2018 | Women's Golf
SEATTLE – The Huskies put two players in the top 15 on the second day of the Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships as junior Sarah Rhee is tied for fifth and junior Wenyung Keh is 11th following 36 holes at the three-day league championship. The 15th-ranked Dawgs are in sixth place overall heading into the final round with a two-day score of 7-over 585 (290-295).
"Today we didn't sink as many birdies as we did during our first round but tomorrow is an opportunity for us to continue to get better," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We had some good looks but just didn't make as many as we could have. I think we need to just get a little bit more out of the bottom of our lineup and they're extremely capable. Tomorrow, we'll need to tough it out and with the things that are problematic, they're going to have to just figure out a way to get it done and play the way we know we are capable of playing. Obviously the big stuff is coming up and we'd like to end on a good note with a nice round and see where that puts us."
Rhee continued to hold onto her top five location after entering the day tied for first as she posted a 1-over 73 to move her two-day total to 3-under 141 (68-73). She will enter Tuesday's final round tied for fifth and just three strokes off the lead. In her first five holes of the day, Rhee went 2-over but followed with a 3-under over the next eight holes to put her at 1-under heading into the 14th. In that span, Rhee birdied the par-four 12th hole and scored her first eagle of the season on the par-five, 422-yard 13th. Following blemishes on the 14th and 16th, Rhee finished at 1-over.
Junior Wenyung Keh used a second-round score of 1-under 71 to move up three spots into 11th on Monday putting her at even-par 144 overall (73-71). Her round was also highlighted by an eagle coming on the par-four, 236-yard seventh to put her at 1-under at that point. She followed with three birdies and three bogeys to keep her at 1-under ending the day.
"Sarah and Wenyung have really been playing well, striking the ball well, just playing within themselves and not trying to do too much and they've played pretty flawlessly for two days," added Mulflur. "They've been good about their decision making and that's always encouraging to see. It was also fun to see them both eagle a hole today as well, that really gets you going out on the course."
Freshman Rino Sasaki also climbed up the leaderboard during the second round as she climbed six spots thanks to a 2-over 74, which was a three-stroke improvement from her first round of 77. She's now at 7-over 151 which places her tied for 31st. The newcomer used three birdies on the day to make the six-spot move.
Matching her score from Sunday's first round, sophomore Karen Miyamoto is tied for 42nd with a 10-over 154 (77-77) while junior Julianne Alvarez sits tied for 44th with an 11-over 155 (75-80).
No. 1 UCLA holds the team lead at 3-under 573 (287-286) while two Bruins are tied for first at 6-under 138 (Patty Tavatanakit and Lilia Vu). No. 6 USC is in second, No. 9 Arizona is third, No. 25 Colorado is first and No. 6 Stanford is in fifth.
Washington will tee off at Broadmoor Golf Club here in Seattle at 9 a.m. off of the first tee on Tuesday and will be paired with Stanford. Admission is free for fans who want to come out and watch.
