Keh Ties for Fifth as UW Finishes Seventh at Pac-12 Championships

SEATTLE – University of Washington junior Wenyung Keh saved her best round for last as she led the 15th-ranked Huskies with a tie for fifth at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, tying the fourth-best finish at the league championship in UW program history. Washington as a team finished seventh overall with a 23-over 887 (293-295-299) and placed two Dawgs in the top 10 for just the second time in program history.
"It was a disappointing finish obviously for us but the Pac-12 Conference is such tough competition with seven teams ranked in the top 25 and so we knew it was going to be a fight out there," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "I was proud of the way they handled themselves and they're great kids and are a very easy group to be around. As disappointed as they are, we know we have good golf ahead of us. Hopefully we learn from this tournament and use it as motivation and an opportunity to get better going forward as we head into the postseason."
Keh continued her stellar play during Tuesday's final 18 holes as she scored a 2-under 70, her best round of the three-day tournament, to earn the fifth place tie with a 2-under 214 (73-71-70). Her showing ties the best by a Husky since 2016 when Charlotte Thomas also tied for fifth. It is also the sixth top-five finish by a Dawg at the annual league championship.
Keh's final round, which moved her six spots up the leaderboard, was kicked off by birdies on her first two holes to put her at two-under. Despite bogeys on holes four and six, the junior birdied the par-four seventh to go back under par where she would stay the rest of the tournament. She added an additional birdie on the 13th hole en route to her best round of the tournament.
In her three appearances at the league championships, Keh has yet to finish outside of the top 25 and she extended her streak of top 25 finishes overall to 13-straight events dating back to last season. Additionally, Keh earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors following the conclusion of the championships.
She was joined in the top 10 by junior Sarah Rhee, who's even-par 216 (68-73-75) earned her a tie for ninth place. Rhee was in the top 10 the entire tournament en route to her fourth top 10 effort of the season. After tying the record for Broadmoor's competitive course on day one with her 4-under 68, Rhee carded rounds of 1-over 73 and 3-over 75 to earn her first top 10 finish at the Pac-12 Championships as a Husky.
"For both Sarah and Wenyung to finish in the top 10 with this skilled of a field of golfers, is really impressive," added Mulflur. "They really just grinded it out all three days and never gave up. I was really proud of how they played this week."
Washington has now had two players finish in the top 10 at the league championships twice as Keh and Rhee join the duo of Lindsey Morgan (6th) and Louise Friberg (7th) who placed in the top 10 at the 2002 tournament.
Junior Julianne Alvarez finished tied for 40th with a 14-over 230 (75-80-75) as she posted a 3-over 75 over her final 18 holes, matching her round one score. Alvarez climbed four spots during Tuesday's round thanks to three birdies on her front nine. Following her by just one stroke was freshman Rino Sasaki who carded a 15-over 231 (77-74-80) for a 44th-place tie. Sophomore Karen Miyamoto rounded out the UW contingent as she placed tied for 48th with a 17-over 233 (77-77-79).
No. 1 UCLA won the team title with its 4-under 860 while Patty Tavatanakit of the Bruins took home the individual crown following a one-hole playoff with teammate Lilia Vu.
The selection show for the 2018 NCAA Regionals will air on Wednesday, April 25 at 2:30 p.m. PT and will be televised live on the Golf Channel. This year's regional site locations are Austin (Texas), San Francisco (California), Tallahassee (Florida) and Madison (Wisconsin) and will take place May 7-9.
