Huskies Lose Hard-Fought Game 3-2 to #3 UCLA
April 21, 2018 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – The #1 Washington Huskies scored first but took the loss to #3 UCLA Saturday, falling 3-2. Sis Bates double twice in the game, while Kelly Burdick drove in two runs with a double of her own. The Huskies are 41-4 on the season now.
Washington struck in the first inning with two runs. After Bates doubled and Julia DePonte ripped a single through the right side, Burdick got ahold of a ball and sent it to deep center. It dropped just in front of the wall, allowing two runs to score.
UCLA would manage a single in the first but Gabbie Plain retired eight in a row after that for Washington. She would be saddled with the loss, just her second of the year, despite walking none and picking up four more strikeouts.
UCLA tied the game in the fourth with a two-run home run, making it 2-2. UCLA would put two baserunners in scoring position after that, only to have Plain rebound with a swinging strikeout to end the inning.
A controversial play in the sixth made a difference in the game. After Kirstyn Thomas and Nawai Kaupe reached base, Taylor Van Zee ripped a ball down the rightfield line into the corner. The ball was ruled foul, however, stranding two baserunners for UW and keeping the game tied.
UCLA would hit a two-out home run to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.
