Singles Struggles Leads to 4-1 Loss at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – Despite winning the doubles point, Washington men's tennis lost the road match 4-1 at No. 31 California on Friday.
Washington (13-11, 2-5 Pac-12) took the early advantage after winning the doubles point over Cal (11-7, 3-3 Pac-12). The first doubles win came on court three. Piers Foley and Jake Douglas teamed up to win 6-4. At No. 1 doubles, Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer upset No. 35 Billy Griffith and J.T. Nishimura in a close 7-5 set to clinch the point.
In singles, the Dawgs struggled, winning two sets in all of the matches. At No. 4 singles, Amit Batta lost in two sets, 6-4, 6-3, allowing the Bears to tie up the team score at 1-1. Jake Douglas lost to No. 58 Billy Griffith on court one, 6-4, 6-2, giving Cal the 2-1 lead.
After Sommer lost at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4, the match was in jeopardy for Washington with Foley down on court six. Foley barely lost the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(4), but the momentum was on the Bears' side in the second set. Foley lost the second set 6-1 and Cal clinched the 4-1 win.
Both Mitch Stewart and Jack Davis were in a third set when the match was called. Stewart was on the brink of losing, down 5-1 in the third. Davis won a tiebreaker to force a third set when Cal sealed the win on court six.
