Huskies Wrap Up Non-Conference Play In Las Vegas
March 06, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - Now 23-0 on the season, the #1 Washington Huskies head to Las Vegas this weekend for their final non-conference tournament, playing five games in three days. Washington will take on New Mexico State twice and DePaul, UNLV, and Portland State once each at the Rebel Classic before starting Pac-12 play next weekend.
The Huskies are third in the nation in runs scored now, averaging 8.26 runs per game to lead the Pac-12. Washington leads the conference in slugging percentage (.642), hits (228), doubles (42), home runs (37), and walks (81) offensively. The Husky pitching staff has been just as impressive and sits first in the conference in strikeouts (189) and second in ERA (0.90) and opposing batting average (.157).
Julia DePonte was named the Pac-12's Player of the Week this week, continuing Washington's season sweep of the award. The Huskies have won the Player of the Week award every week of the season so far, with DePonte joining Taylor Van Zee and Kirstyn Thomas in winning that award. Thomas has twice won the award as well as winning the ESPNW Player of the Week award nationally after week one. She is joined this week by Gabbie Plain in national honors, as Plain was named the NFCA's National Pitcher of the Week after twice shutting out #11 Alabama.
New Mexico State will enter the Rebel Classic sitting at 10-8 on the season. Last week, the Aggies went 2-4, splitting a doubleheader with Texas Tech and winning one of three matchups with Coastal Carolina. New Mexico State also lost to Arizona State. The Aggies will play two games, against DePaul and Portland State, before facing off with Washington on Friday, March 9 at 1:30 pm and on Saturday, March 10 at 11:15 am.
UNLV is 14-6 this season, including an 8-3 mark at home. The Rebels and Huskies last played in 2016, with Washington winning 9-0 in six innings at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic. All-time, Washington leads the series 8-3-1, including the only tie of Heather Tarr's coaching career at UW, in 2008.
Washington and DePaul will face off for the first time since 2013, when Washington won 6-4 at the Judi Garman Classic. DePaul is 14-5 on the season and enter the Rebel Classic having gone 3-2 last week.
Portland State is now 2-12 on the season, having lost all five of its games at the Husky Classic last weekend. Washington defeated Portland State 4-1 in the final game of that tournament. The two wins for the Vikings have come in the season opener against Sam Houston State and against New Mexico State.
The first game of the Rebel Classic for Washington will be Friday, March 9 at 1:30 pm against New Mexico State. All games will be streamed live online via the Mountain West Network.
