Ogasawara, Thomas Key Offense In 9-1 Win
March 09, 2018 | Softball
LAS VEGAS – In the first game of the Rebel Classic, the #1 Washington Huskies rode a big sixth inning to a 9-1 win over the New Mexico State Aggies. Rachel Ogasawara had a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and a HBP, while Kirstyn Thomas blasted her 11th home run of the season.
Taran Alvelo had her third start allowing just one hit, getting her 12th win of the season with a complete game. Alvelo allowed only one hit and one walk all game.
Ogasawara's impressive day keyed the Husky offense beginning in the third inning as her first double started a rally after Washington trailed 1-0. After Kelly Burdick beat out an infield single and stole second, Taylor Van Zee bounced a ball into the outfield for an RBI. The throw home to try and get Ogasawara got away from the catcher, allowing Burdick to score and give UW a 2-1 lead.
Ogasawara drove in a run in the fourth to extend that lead. After Trysten Melhart beat out a chopper for a leadoff single, Ogasawara blasted a liner off the glove of a leaping first baseman. The ball veered away into foul territory for a double that scored Melhart.
The Washington offense exploded in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to help the Huskies win by run rule. The first six batters of the inning reached base, beginning with Amirah Milloy's single. Noelle Hee brought in a run with a pinch-hit single, then Van Zee brought in two more with another hit. Thomas then sent the ball out of the park for a three-run shot and a 9-1 lead.
