March 09, 2018 | Softball
LAS VEGAS – The #1 Washington Huskies picked up an 8-0 win over UNLV Friday on the strength of a gem of a game by Gabbie Plain in the circle. The freshman struck out 13 in the game, a new career high, to help the Huskies move to 25-0 on the year. Kirstyn Thomas drove in three runs in the game while the 7-8-9 trio of Taryn Atlee, Amirah Milloy, and Kelly Burdick went a combined 7-for-10.
Plain started the day by striking out the side in the first, one of two times she struck out the side in the game. The Australian would allow only two batters to reach scoring position all night, giving up three hits in a shutout win.
Burdick, who scored twice in the first game of the day, picked up the first run for the Huskies against UNLV. Burdick dropped a bunt single that died on the third-base foul line for a leadoff single in the third, then came around to score when Thomas bounced a grounder up the middle just to the left of second base.
The offense exploded for another big inning in the fourth, scoring five runs to cement a big lead. Milloy drove in two runs with a sharp double down the leftfield line. After a sacrifice fly by Taylor Van Zee made it 4-0, Thomas' single to left brought in two more runs. Seven of the first eight batters in the inning would reach base for the Huskies.
Maggie Gallagher would drive in a run with a pinch-hit walk in the fifth, pushing in a run with the bases loaded. A passed ball in the seventh added the final run of the game for the Huskies.
Plain would end the day with another strikeout in the seventh to give her 13 on the day. She would strike out multiple batters in four innings.
