Huskies Take Down DePaul 5-2 At Rebel Classic
March 10, 2018 | Softball
LAS VEGAS β The #1 Washington Huskies picked up their 26th win of the season, beating the DePaul Blue Demons 5-2 Saturday.Β Julia DePonte hit her eighth home run of the season in the first inning of the game to put the Huskies on top for good.Β Samantha Manti and Taran Alvelo combined for seven strikeouts in the win.
Nawai Kaupe and Taylor Van Zee also drove in runs in the game.Β Kaupe singled on a rope to centerfield in the fourth to score Kaija Gibson, who had pinch ran and stole second earlier in the inning.
The Huskies loaded the bases in the sixth and picked up another run.Β The rally began with walks to Emma Helm and Noelle Hee, with Kelly Burdick blistering an infield single off the shortstop's glove to load the bases.Β Van Zee then grounded to the shortstop, who tried and failed to beat Burdick to the second-base bag as a run came in and made it 4-0.
DePaul would pick up two runs in the sixth, bringing Alvelo into the circle in relief.Β Alvelo struck out the side from there, stranding a runner on third to keep the lead at two.
More patience at the plate from Washington put another run on the board in the seventh.Β Kirstyn Thomas and DePonte each drew walks, then moved into scoring position on a perfectly-executed sac bunt by Helm.Β A wild pitch would push Thomas across the plate for the final 5-2 score.
