Bates Single Earns Huskies 3-2 Win In Ten Innings
March 10, 2018 | Softball
LAS VEGAS – The #1 Washington Huskies triumphed 3-2 over the New Mexico State Aggies in a thrilling ten-inning game Saturday. After four scoreless innings of a 2-2 tie, Sis Bates knocked a single into centerfield to bring in the winning run in the tenth. Gabbie Plain, who pitched 5.0 scoreless innings in relief, picked up her ninth win of the season.
Taran Alvelo started the game for the Huskies and struck out seven in her 5.0 innings, including six in the first 3.1 innings. Her outing was marred only by two solo home runs in the fourth, accounting for New Mexico State's only scoring in the game.
After threatening all game, the Huskies finally struck in the fifth with two runs, tying the game. Taylor Van Zee blasted a double to deep center over the head of a leaping centerfielder to score Kelly Burdick, who had singled through the right side earlier in the inning. Van Zee would score one batter later when Bates singled to right and the ball got away from the rightfielder, making it 2-2.
Washington continued to create offensive chances from there but couldn't get a run across until the tenth. Plain dominated in the circle during that time, striking out six. That included an impressive ninth inning in which Plain struck out the side with a runner on third. The freshman ended the game having retired seven straight.
