Huskies Kick Off Conference Play This Week
March 12, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - The #1 Washington Huskies look to carry their undefeated record into conference play this week, finishing up the regular non-conference season with a Wednesday game against Bryant before heading to Arizona to play three games against Arizona State. Washington's home matchup against Bryant will be at 7:00 pm, with tickets available online. The Arizona State series, beginning Saturday, March 17 at 5:00 pm, will be aired live on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Huskies finished yet another perfect tournament last weekend, going 4-0 at the Rebel Classic. Washington is now 27-0 on the season, one of just two undefeated teams left in Division I alongside fellow Pac-12 team UCLA. Washington has recorded 13 shutouts this year after blanking UNLV this past weekend; only seven teams have scored multiple runs against the Huskies all year.
The four wins this weekend also guaranteed that Washington will end this season with a winning record. That extends Washington's streak of winning seasons to 26; the Huskies have never had a losing season in their history.
Taylor Van Zee recorded her 200th career hit this weekend while Kelly Burdick became the fourth active Husky to record both 100 starts and 100 hits in her career, joining Van Zee, Trysten Melhart, and Julia DePonte. Sis Bates and Kirstyn Thomas each have a chance to join that group soon: Bates needs eight more starts, while Thomas needs eight more starts and eight more hits to reach 100 in each category.
Gabbie Plain extended her scoreless streak to 28.0 innings with two more shutout performances. The freshman struck out 13 in an 8-0 win over UNLV, the second 13-strikeout game by a Husky this year after Taran Alvelo did so against Wichita State in February. Plain's 13 strikeouts were the most by a Husky freshman since Danielle Lawrie in 2006; no Husky of any class has recorded more than 13 K in a single game since Bryana Walker's 14 against Oklahoma in 2014.
The Bryant Bulldogs are 4-10 this season. Bryant has lost its last five games after starting 4-5, losing all of its games at the Oregon Duck Invitational last weekend. Washington and Bryant have never played each other before.
Arizona State is 21-2 this year, riding an 11-game winning streak that will be put on the line with two games against Iowa before playing the Huskies. The Sun Devils have played 17 of their games at home so far, going 16-1 in Tempe. Last week, Arizona State swept Minnesota in a three-game series. In 2017, the Huskies and Sun Devils opened Pac-12 play against each other, with Washington sweeping ASU. Washington has won six consecutive matchups against the Sun Devils and have not lost a series to Arizona State since 2013.
