Washington Wins Final Game Of Husky Classic 4-1
March 04, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – The #1 Washington Huskies completed a perfect weekend with a 4-1 win over the Portland State Vikings Sunday. Washington won all five games during the Husky Classic and are now 23-0 on the season. Taran Alvelo recorded her sixth double-digit strikeout game of the year, fanning 11 en route to her 11th win in 12 appearances.
Despite four strikeouts in the first three innings from Alvelo, the Huskies faced a deficit going into the bottom of the fourth after Portland State scored a run in the top half. That deficit was short-lived though, as Julia DePonte homered on the first pitch of the inning to make it 1-1.
DePonte's monstrous homer to leftfield, her third homer of the Husky Classic, opened things up for the Washington offense. Emma Helm had her second double of the weekend one batter later. After pinch-running for Helm, Kaija Gibson would come around to give the Huskies their first lead of the game when Noelle Hee lined a pinch-hit single up the middle to make it 2-1.
The Huskies added two more runs in the fifth inning for the final 4-1 margin. After walks to Helm and Kirstyn Thomas, Taryn Atlee hit a hard groundball through the first baseman's glove to push another run across and put runners on the corners.
A double steal came next to make it 4-1. Atlee flew to second base and slid in safely as the throw came in well late. Helm burst home as soon as the ball left the catcher's hand and, aided by a bobble at second base, stole home for her first career stolen base.
Alvelo continued her dominant ways from there, ending the game by striking out the side in the seventh.
