Three Big Innings Help Huskies Clinch Series With 10-0 Win
March 30, 2018 | Softball
STANFORD, Calif. – The #1 Washington Huskies picked up a 10-0 win over the Stanford Cardinal Friday, scoring multiple runs in three innings. Washington would run-rule Stanford, winning in six innings. Four different Huskies drove in multiple runs while Taylor Van Zee and Kirstyn Thomas both had three-hit days.
Gabbie Plain retired the first ten batters she faced in the game and only allowed one runner to advance past first all day. The freshman earned her tenth win of the year with her tenth scoreless outing of the season. Plain struck out six and walked only one while allowing just three hits total in the game.
Four runs in the third, all with two outs, put Washington on top for good. The rally began with Thomas' line-drive single to right, with the senior coming around to score when Julia DePonte rapped a double off the right-center wall.
Maggie Gallagher would bring DePonte home two batters later. Gallagher singled up the middle, with DePonte leaping out of the way of a tag attempt by the catcher and touching home safely to make it 2-0. Amirah Milloy would blast a double to score two more in the inning after that.
Thomas, DePonte, and Emma Helm all drove in runs in the fourth as well. Thomas' infield single knocked down by the third baseman scored Kelly Burdick, while DePonte avoided another tag, this time by the first baseman, to allow Van Zee to score. Helm would end the day with two sacrifice flies, scoring Thomas in the fourth and Kaija Gibson in the sixth.
Gibson hit her first career triple in the sixth to bring two runs home before scoring on Helm's sac fly. Gibson hit a hot line drive into center that rolled past a diving centerfielder all the way to the wall to score Thomas and Trysten Melhart. Thomas had previous reached base on a single, her 100th collegiate hit.
