Washington Earns Second Straight Sweep, Winning 9-0 Over Stanford
March 31, 2018 | Softball
STANFORD, Calif. – With a 9-0 win over Stanford today, the #1 Washington Huskies made it two Pac-12 series sweeps in a row, defeating Stanford all three games this weekend. It was the first back-to-back sweeps for Washington since 2013, when it swept UCLA and Oregon State in consecutive series. All nine of Washington's runs today came with two outs as the Huskies hit 7-for-12 with two outs. The Huskies improve to 35-2 on the year and are now on a six-game winning streak.
Gabbie Plain was nearly unhittable for the second day in a row, stretching her scoreless streak to 13.0 innings. Plain retired the first 11 batters she faced after retiring the first ten in a row yesterday. She would not allow a hit until the sixth inning. Plain ended the day with eight strikeouts while allowing only one batter to reaching scoring position.
Emma Helm continued her torrid hitting of late with a two-run double in the first, one of her career-high three hits in the day. Helm, who would reach base all four plate appearances, knocked a double off the bottom of the centerfield wall to allow Kirstyn Thomas and Julia DePonte to waltz home for an early 2-0 lead.
DePonte and Helm would each score in the third as the lead ballooned to 5-0. Amirah Milloy, who drove in two runs yesterday, ripped a home run to rightfield to clear the bases. It was Milloy's second home run of the season and gave her 17 RBI on the year.
Washington continued to excel in pinch-hit situations, with Nawai Kaupe coming up big this time. Kaupe sent the first pitch she saw in the fifth down the leftfield line into foul territory for her first career triple. Thomas, who led off the inning with a single, would score, as would Morgan Allen.
Helm earned her third hit in the seventh with a leadoff single, the fourth consecutive inning the Huskies put the leadoff batter on base. After Taryn Atlee walked, Kelly Burdick stroked an RBI single to right to bring Helm home. Burdick would be caught in a rundown but stayed alive long enough for Atlee to score, making it 9-0.
Stanford would single to start the seventh and moved the runner to second with a groundout, the first and only runner to advance past first all day for the Cardinal. Plain forced two quick outs on the next three pitches to wrap up the win.
