Stanford Road Trip Next For Huskies
March 26, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - Fresh off a series sweep of a top-ten team, the #1 Washington Huskies will take on the Stanford Cardinal on the road this week, heading to California for a three-game series beginning Thursday, March 29 at 6:00 pm.
Last weekend, Washington earned its first sweep of Arizona since 2010, taking down the #9 Wildcats in three straight days behind dominant pitching and timely hitting. The Huskies earned two extra-inning walk-offs in the series, with Julia DePonte homering in Friday's win and Taryn Atlee driving in Emma Helm with a double on Saturday. Sis Bates was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for her efforts over the weekend, which included a stretch in which she reached base five consecutive plate appearances.
Bates' honor was the fifth Player of the Week award for the Huskies this year, the most in a single season in UW history. Julia DePonte and Taylor Van Zee have also won the award, while Kirstyn Thomas has won it twice already. Washington also has one Pitcher of the Week (Taran Alvelo) and Freshman of the Week (Gabbie Plain) award to its credit.
The Huskies also earned their 15th shutout of the season, against Arizona when Alvelo retired 20 in a row Sunday. Alvelo allowed only one baserunner all game on a single in the first inning for her sixth shutout of a top-ten opponent in her career and second this season. The junior also had a career-best 14 strikeouts Friday night against Arizona.
Last time Washington visited Stanford, in 2016, the Huskies came away with a three-game sweep. Washington took two of three from Stanford last season and have not lost a series to the Cardinal since 2012. Since then, the Huskies are 12-3 against the Cardinal.
Stanford will enter the series 20-10 on the year but having lost two of three to Utah in its opening series of Pac-12 play. Stanford carried a seven-game winning streak into that series. This will be the second time this season that the Cardinal have faced a ranked opponent: they started the year with a 10-1 loss in six innings to #19 BYU on February 8.
