Bates, Helm Key Late Offense In 8-1 Win
March 29, 2018 | Softball
STANFORD, Calif. – The #1 Washington Huskies picked up a win with an onslaught of late offense, defeating the Stanford Cardinal 8-1 in the first game of the three-game series. Washington would never trail in the game, taking a 3-1 lead in the fifth then exploding for five more runs in the seventh. The Huskies are 33-2 now and have won four straight Pac-12 games to move to 5-2 in conference.
Taran Alvelo, making her 100th career appearance, earned her 17th win this year while allowing no earned runs. Alvelo struck out six in the game while walking just one.
Alvelo allowed singles in the first and second but bounced back with strikeouts immediately following each of those baserunners. The only run for Stanford would come on a pair of throwing errors in the fourth that tied the game 1-1.
Sis Bates, who would score three runs in the game, came across for the lead in the third. Bates earned a walk with two outs. Kirstyn Thomas would rip a double into the left-center gap that was cut off by the centerfielder but Bates was running full-speed from the get-go, scoring from first to make it 1-0.
Thomas would drive in another run in the fifth to put the Huskies back up 2-1. Kelly Burdick and Bates started things, using some smarts on the basepaths to take extra bases after a Bates single. Thomas' groundout would bring Burdick home, then Bates would score on a wild pitch.
Bates scored the first run of the big five-run seventh after her second walk of the day. For the second time in the last three games, Emma Helm sent the ball out of the park with a big home run, depositing the ball over the leftfield wall.
That opened the floodgates, with three more runs coming in to score in bases-loaded situations. Burdick drove in one with a line drive to left, then HBPs for Taylor Van Zee and Bates made it 8-1.
