Dawgs Beat Aztecs on the Road, 5-2
March 23, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SAN DIEGO – Washington men's tennis picked up another road win by defeating San Diego State 5-2 by earning the doubles point and picking up four singles victories on Friday.
"We are really happy to come down to San Diego and sweep these teams on the road," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "It's not easy to get both of them on the road. We are eager to come back and get ready for Santa Barbara at home on Wednesday."
The Huskies (10-7, 0-2 Pac-12) started the match strong by earning the doubles point over the Aztects (2-15, 1-0 MWC). No. 2 and No. 3 doubles picked up set wins for the Dawgs, both by the same 6-3 score.
In singles, the matches were competitive. Five sets went to a tiebreaker to determine a winner, Washington coming up with three of those. Three matches went to three sets, two of which went in favor of the Huskies.
Enzo Sommer was the first to finish for UW. After a close 7-5 first-set win, he cruised to a 6-1 victory in the second set to take the match. San Diego State earned its first point, however, not long after by taking No. 6 singles.
The two ranked seniors were the next to finish. No. 80 Mitch Stewart won in two close sets at No. 2 singles. He won the first 6-3, but then needed a tiebreaker to take the second. He dominated the tiebreaker 7-0 to win the match. No. 82 Jake Douglas needed three sets to get the singles point on court one. After dropping the opening set 6-4, he won the next two, 6-3, 6-2, clinching the match for Washington.
The last two matches went to three sets each. On court four, Amit Batta easily won his first set, 6-1, before losing the tiebreaker in the second. Facing another tiebreaker, he won the third set, 7-6(4), winning the match. The Aztecs won the match at No. 5 singles in three sets to get their second point.
The Dawgs are back home next week, hosting two matches.
