Slow Start Results in 4-3 Loss to UCSB
March 28, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – After closely contested singles matches, No. 49 Washington men's tennis fell 4-3 to UC Santa Barbara at the Quillian Tennis Stadium on Friday.

"I'm frustrated," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "It was a good, hard-fought match. Almost every court was a very tight match. I felt that we did not come out well in doubles and in singles. I know we prepared the same and we were ready to go, but we did not have the necessary level of intensity. They (UCSB) are a good team. They are way better than where they are ranked."

The Dawgs (10-8, 0-2 Pac-12) were slow from the start. The Gauchos (9-6, 0-0 Big West) won the doubles point after taking the sets on courts one and two. At No. 1 doubles, the UCSB duo led from the start and never looked back, winning 6-1. Mitch Stewart and Piers Foley led early at No. 2 doubles, up 3-1, but allowed their opponents to win five games in a row to take the set, 6-3.

Washington continued to struggle in singles, dropping four of its first five sets. However, the Dawgs fought hard and saw three matches go to a third set, winning two of those.

UC Santa Barbara won in two sets on courts two and three. Enzo Sommer battled from behind the whole match at No. 3 singles, losing 6-3, 6-3. No. 82 Jake Douglas faced No. 94 Nicolas Moreno and dropped the first set 6-3. The second set was closer, going to a tiebreaker. However, Moreno came away with it, 7-6(4).

Jack Davis picked up UW's first win, taking his match in two sets on court five. His first set was tightly contested, Davis winning 7-5. He had more of a cushion in the second, coming away with it 6-3.

At No. 1 singles, No. 80 Mitch Stewart handled the first set, 6-3, but dropped the second by the same score. In the third set, he won by the same 6-3 score for the Dawgs' second team point. However, moments after Stewart finished, Piers Foley lost at No. 6 singles in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, which clinched the match for the Gauchos. Amit Batta won his three-set match a minute after Foley's match finished.

The Huskies will look to bounce back against Pac-12 foe Oregon at home on Saturday at 2 p..m. PT.
