UW Wins First Road Match, 4-2
March 21, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SAN DIEGO – In the first road match of the season, Washington men's tennis defeated No. 48 San Diego 4-2 behind doubles wins and three singles victories on Wednesday.
"Pulling out a match like this is a team effort," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "We had good performances from a number of guys, starting with doubles. Jake and Jack were very strong and were able to get ahead on their court. Kawika (Lam) was awesome around the net. He was playing really high level doubles. That was good to see for us to get that doubles point. Singles was a battle. We were able to get those matches in straight sets, which was nice."
The Dawgs (9-7, 0-2 Pac-12) earned the doubles point against the Toreros (6-7, 1-0 West Coast) after taking the sets on courts one and three. After the No. 3 doubles duo of Jack Davis and Jake Douglas lost their first game, they won the next six to take the set, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, Enzo Sommer and Kawika Lam had a close set with the No. 79 pairing of Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren. However, the Huskies pulled away to win 6-4 and clinch the doubles point.
Davis was the first to earn a singles win, taking his match on court six in two, 6-4, 6-2. He battled back from being down 3-2 in the first set to win. In the second set, he had control the entire time, cruising to his 6-2 win.
Following Davis' win, two Huskies dropped their matches, allowing the Toreros to tie the team score at 2-2. Both Sommer and Piers Foley lost their matches at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Sommer was close to No. 121 Joel Gamerov in the first set, falling 6-4. The second set saw Gamerov take control, handling Sommer in a 6-2 win. Foley fought from behind in both sets, never taking a lead to lose 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, Douglas took back the lead for UW in the team score after winning his match in two sets. Douglas was tied multiple times in his first set, including at 4-4. He won two games in a row to take the opening set, 6-4. In the second set, he led the majority of the time to take another 6-4 win.
Mitch Stewart clinched the win for Washington after winning his match against No. 77 August Holmgren in two sets on court one. He took the lead in the first set and never looked back, dominating 6-2. In the second set, he was down 2-1 early on, but took back control to win 6-3.
