Huskies Complete Double-Header Sweep
February 24, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE βΒ Game two was not a perfect game, but Washington will take their 5-2 win over UC Riverside to complete a sweep of the visiting Highlanders at Husky Ballpark on Saturday.
Β
Sophomore pitcher Jordan Jones did not allow an earned run over six innings and junior shortstop AJ Graffanino atoned for a pair of first inning errors with a two-run single in a four-run fifth inning to lead the way for the Huskies (4-2).
Β
After having a perfect game thrown at them by Joe DeMers in game one, UC Riverside (2-4) got to Jones in the first inning of game two. Number two hitter Colby Schultz doubled to end any thoughts of back-to-back perfect games for the Huskies and eventually came around to score when AJ Graffanino misplayed a grounder hit by Cade Peters for his second error of the inning.
Β
UC Riverside starter Hazahel Quijada (1-1) was perfect through four innings before running into trouble in the fifth inning. He walked Blake Burton to lead off the inning and gave up a one-out single to Joe Wainhouse to end any thoughts of a perfect game and no-hitter of his own.
Β
Ben Baird singled to load the bases and Nick Roberts walked to force in a run and tie the score, 1-1.
Β
Kaiser Weiss grounded out to score Wainhouse and give the Huskies a 2-1 lead, setting the table for Graffanino to make up for his earlier errors. The Husky shortstop singled sharply into right field to score two runs and give the Huskies a 4-2 advantage.
Β
"In between games, we were all in the locker room dwelling on what Joe did in the first game. How can't you?" said Graffanino. "We needed to do a better job of transitioning to the next game β especially me."
Β
"But, later on, I got a good pitch to hit that third time up and I made the most of it."
Β
The Huskies added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a broken-bat single by Levi Jordan that gave Jones a 5-1 lead when he exited.
Β
Jones (1-1) allowed five hits and the one unearned run, while striking out four. He did not walk a batter.
Β
The Highlanders would cut the Huskies' lead to three with a run in the seventh inning off of Leo Nierenberg, but Stevie Emanuels and Alex Hardy would record the final six outs to ensure the Huskies' win.
Β
Hardy picked up his second save the season.
Β
Each team had seven hits.
Β
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. game. The game was moved up an hour to combat possible weather issues.
