Huskies Open At Home Against UC Riverside
February 21, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE - Washington (2-2) welcomes UC Riverside (2-2) to Seattle for the Diamond Dawgs' home-opening series at Husky Ballpark, this Friday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 25. The two teams will open the series on Friday at 6:00 p.m., followed by a double-header on Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m. and capped by a Sunday, 1:00 p.m. tilt.
Both the Huskies and Highlanders opened their 2018 seasons away from home and were 2-2 during the week. UC Riverside split two-game series against Washington State and Nebraska in Tempe, Ariz., while the Huskies split four-games at Sacramento State.
In addition to attending the four-game series this weekend in person, fans can follow along with an audio and video stream on the Pac-12 live Washington feed. Shane Lantz will call the action in the first three games and Luke Mounger will take us home on Sunday. Constant game updates will be tweeted @UW_Baseball. Β
SERIES HISTORY VS. UC RIVERSIDE
Washington leads the all-time series 15-14 and hold a 4-1 advantage in Seattle including 1-2 in 2002 and 3-0 in 2007. The Huskies are also 0-2 on a neutral field vs. the Highlanders and 11-11 at Riverside. The two teams split a pair of four-game the last times they met in 2016 and 2008. In the 2016 series, the Huskies won the first two games, 2-1 in 10 innings and 17-4 in the second game. The Highlanders won the final two game, each by a score of 6-5. The first time these two teams met was back in 1967.Β
NOTEWORTHY:Β
β’ This is the earliest series the Huskies have hosted at home since 2004 when UW played Gonzaga in a three-game series at home, Feb. 20-22.Β
β’ Eleven different Huskies made their UW debuts this past week, including Mason Cerrillo who played his freshman year at Washington State. Six position players and five pitchers in all made their UW debuts. Of note, Joe Wainhouse played last year for the Huskies as a pitcher, but last week he took his first career UW at bats.
β’ AJ Graffanino and Mason Cerrillo were the only Husky hitters to collect a hit in each game last week. For Graffanino, he is picking where he left last season. He hit .304 in May and ended the year with a modest three-game hit streak, but when combined with this year, he has hit safely in seven-straight games.
β’ Washington's bullpen was 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA in the first week of action. Seven pitchers combined to allow four earned runs on 11 hits and 13 walks over 18.1 innings. They also recorded 24 strikeouts during that span.
β’ UW finished the 2017 season third nationally in fielding percentage and committed 36 errors all season. Last week vs. the Hornets, UW committed seven error, three more than they had in any series last season.
WHO ARE THESE HUSKIES:Β
β’ The Huskies return 20 players who were on the 2017 roster and welcome in 15 newcomers.Β
Β Fielders: Washington returns Β three All-Pac-12 honorable mention players in the field in AJ Graffanino at shortstop, Levi Jordan at second base and Willie MacIver, who will move from third base to catcher and first base this season. Besides that, the Huskies will be replacing every spot in the lineup. Β
Β Pitchers: The Huskies will have to replace 2017 ace Noah Bremer and bullpen stalwart Greg Minier, but besides that, return mostly intact. Joe DeMers, who was honorable mention All-Pac-12 in 2017, will assume the role as Friday night starter and he will be followed by sophomores Chris Micheles and Jordan Jones, who appeared in 23 and 18 games respectively. Senior Alex Hardy (5-0) returns and will anchor the backend of the UW bullpen. Sophomore Leo Nierenberg will fill in the gap as a late-inning reliever who has closing experience.Β
