Washington Sweeps Bearkat Classic With 13-1 Win
February 18, 2018 | Softball
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The #4 Washington Huskies completed another perfect tournament, defeating Sam Houston State 13-1 to move to 10-0 on the season. Taylor Van Zee and Julia DePonte each drove in three runs in the game as the Huskies broke double-digit scoring for the seventh time this season. The Huskies eight-game shutout streak, a program record, came to a close in the game.
Gabbie Plain picked up the win for the Huskies, her third in three starts. The freshman matched her career high for strikeouts with eight, a mark she set earlier in the tournament against Wichita State.
Another leadoff hit by Van Zee started a first-inning rally. DePonte put the first runs on the board with her third homer of the tournament, driving in Van Zee and Kirstyn Thomas.
Plain struck out five straight batters over the first and second innings, striking out the side in order in the second. She would allow only two hits in the game.
Van Zee had her first of two extra-base hits in the game in the second, this one a homer. With Trysten Melhart on board after a single up the middle, Van Zee took the second pitch of her at-bat just to the side of the scoreboard in left-center for a two-run home run and a 5-0 Husky lead.
Noelle Hee was responsible for the first run of a big third inning. After Thomas chopped an infield single, Hee lifted a ball that dropped just inside of the rightfield foul line for an RBI double.
Melhart and Emma Helm followed that with their first RBI of the season, each singling later in the inning to add to the lead.
After Sam Houston State put the first run on the board against the Huskies since the season opener, Washington responded with a five-run fifth. Helm had her second RBI single of the game, followed by a Van Zee doubled to score another. Sis Bates would triple in the inning as well, her first triple of the season on a ball that missed leaving the park by just inches.
Two wild pitches scored a couple more runs, helping the Huskies to the final 13-1 gap. Now with a sizable lead, Plain worked through an easy bottom of the fifth to end the game.
