Huskies Take Undefeated Record To Texas
February 14, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - After a huge opening weekend, the #4 Washington Huskies will bring their perfect 5-0 record back on the road this week. Washington starts the weekend at the Bearkat Softball Classic for five games, beginning with a Friday, February 16 game against Northern Colorado. After that, the Huskies will take on the Lamar Cardinals in a Monday, February 19 doubleheader.
Last week, the Huskies scored in double digits in every game en route to sweeping the Peterson Hotels Invitational. Washington scored 70 runs over their five wins, the second-most in Husky history for a five-game tournament. Washington also tied its record for fewest runs allowed in a five-game tournament, giving up three runs in the season-opener before shutting out the opposition in the next four games.
Averaging a NCAA-best 14 runs a game, Washington is one of only two teams to be in the top five in the nation in batting average, home runs, runs, and slugging percentage after the first week of the season. The Huskies are second in batting average (.481), second in home runs (16), and first in slugging percentage (.932). With ten or more runs in every game this season, Washington is also just one game away from the program record for consecutive games scoring ten or more runs, set March 5-17, 2011.
The Husky defense has just been just as impressive, with a four-game shutout streak that is the longest since a six-game streak from April 19-23, 1995. Washington is tenth in the nation and second in the Pac-12 in team ERA at 0.54. Gabbie Plain and Taran Alvelo each have spotless ERAs, with Alvelo leading the conference in strikeouts with 27 in 14.0 IP and second in opponent's batting average at .089.
The impressive start to the season garnered the Huskies a handful of weekly awards. Alvelo was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, an honor she received three times last year en route to leading the conference in wins with 35. Kirstyn Thomas was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week thanks to a school-record five home runs in her first five games of the season. Thomas currently leads the NCAA in home runs and RBI (16) and is second in the nation in runs scored (13) to her teammate Sis Bates, who has scored 16 runs.
Washington will play Northern Colorado, Seton Hall, and Sam Houston State once each at the Bearkat Classic and face off with Wichita State twice. After the tournament ends, the Huskies will head to nearby Beaumont, Texas to play two games against Lamar. Those five teams are a combined 10-10 so far this year, led by Seton Hall's 3-1 record. The game against Sam Houston State on Saturday, February 17 at 5:00 pm will be aired live on ESPN3, the first of Washington's conference-leading four games shown on ESPN this season.
