Home Runs Help Huskies To 9-1 Win Over Lamar
February 19, 2018 | Softball
BEAUMONT, Texas – For the ninth time this season, the #4 Washington Huskies run-ruled an opponent, defeating the Lamar Cardinals 9-1 on the road in game one of the doubleheader. Kirstyn Thomas hit her NCAA-leading eighth home run in the game, while Sis Bates and Maggie Gallagher each reached base every plate appearance.
Samantha Manti bested her season high for strikeouts with seven in her 5.0 innings, her most since striking out nine in a 7.0-inning shutout against Arizona State last March. Manti is 3-0 now on the season, with a 1.31 ERA to her name.
Bates and Gallagher each had perfect days at the plate. Bates tripled in her only at-bat, drawing two walks as well. She would score every time, beginning with her run on Thomas' home run to centerfield in the first inning that cleared the fence without a doubt off the bat.
Gallagher would pick up an RBI while going 2-for-2 on the day. The sophomore knocked a double off the wall in the third inning to score Julia DePonte. DePonte had previously picked up two RBI in the inning when her single bouncing through the middle into the outfield brought Bates and Thomas home.
The Huskies quickly added to what was then a 5-1 lead, beginning with the dangerous bat of Taylor Van Zee in the fourth. Washington's leadoff hitter launched a home run that carried over the wall with ease to put another run on the board. Bates would triple one batter later, coming a foot away from a home run as the ball hit high off the wall. She would score on a Thomas sacrifice fly for a 7-1 lead.
Emma Helm had her second consecutive game with an RBI, driving in Gallagher in the fifth with a single into the outfield. The Huskies would add one more run in that inning before a scoreless fifth by Manti put a close to the Washington win.
