Huskies Drop Another ITA Match
February 17, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – In the second match of the 2018 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship, Washington men's tennis dropped its match to No. 9 Oklahoma State, 4-1, on Saturday night.
"Really disappointed with how we came out tonight," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "It was shocking. We have improved, we are better than that. We have put too much time and effort into our work and what we are doing to come out and play like that. We owe each other more. We owe the Husky tennis family more."
The doubles point was won by the Cowboys (9-2) over the Huskies (6-3). At No. 1 doubles, Enzo Sommer and Kawika Lam earned two games, but ultimately fell, 6-2. No. 2 doubles did not fare much better, dropping their set, 6-1. The lone doubles win for the Huskies came from Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart at No. 3 doubles. They jumped out to an early start and never looked back, winning their set, 6-1.
The Dawgs battled hard in singles. Courts two, three and four all went to a third set. No. 3 singles with Sommer was the only match of those three to finish. Sommer won the second set to force a third, but the comeback fell short. He lost 6-3 in the third, which clinched the match for Oklahoma State.
Foley's first set on court five was a battle, going to a tiebreaker. He won the tiebreaker, 8-6, and went on to win the second set as well, 6-2, for the Huskies' first and only point of the match.
Courts one and six were the only two to fall in two sets. Douglas at No. 1 singles was up 5-2 in the second set, but No. 88 Julian Cash stormed back to win, 7-5, and take the match.
Washington will face Baylor on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Nordstrom Tennis Center to cap off the 2018 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship weekend. The semifinals of the tournament feature No. 6 Texas A&M against No. 7 UCLA at noon PT followed by No. 1 Wake Forest against No. 5 Stanford at 3:30 p.m. PT. Both matches are in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Live scoring for all matches can be found on the GoHuskies.com ITA page.
