Dawgs Close Out ITA Weekend With a Loss to Baylor
February 18, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Washington men's tennis ended a tough weekend at the 2018 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship with a 4-1 loss against No. 12 Baylor on Sunday night.
"I'm really disappointed that we didn't come out because I thought we could," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "While there are things I think we could do better, what I loved tonight was how hard our guys played from start to finish. Our guys were bleeding purple tonight, and I can be really proud of that."
The Dawgs (6-4) came out with fire in the doubles portion of the match. Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart finished first at No. 2 doubles, picking up a 6-3 win. After Washington lost 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, the deciding set was at No. 3 doubles. The new pairing of Alexis Alvarez and Jake Douglas teamed up well together, battling to a tiebreaker. However, they fell short, dropping the tiebreaker 7-5 with the Bears taking the doubles point.
Stewart started off strong in his singles match, winning the first five games in a row. No. 24 Johannes Schretter from Baylor scraped together two games before Stewart took the set. The second set was more competitive with the two trading games. The senior came out on top, however, taking the match in two sets.
A couple of three-set matches ended up favoring Baylor for key match points. Sebastian Hawken played in another three-set match. After taking the first set, 6-4, he dropped the second, 6-2, and ultimately lost the third, 6-3. Enzo Sommer had a chance to take the first set at 5-4, but his opponent scored three unanswered games to take the set, 7-5. Sommer dominated the second set, 6-2, to force a third. The Bears' Matias Soto won the third set, 6-3, to clinch the match for his team.
On court five, Foley was at five games until Baylor's Constantin Frantzen forced a tiebreaker. Foley fell in the tiebreaker, 7-4. His second set started strong for the junior again, going up 4-1. This time, he did not relinquish the lead, winning the second set 6-3 to go to a third. Foley was trailing when the match was called.
At No. 1 singles, No. 48 Douglas battled with No. 64 Bjoern Petersen. Douglas took the first set, 6-4. In the second set, he was up 5-2 and allowed Petersen to win four-straight games to take a 6-5 lead. Douglas put together a game to get to a tiebreaker, which Petersen ended up taking. The match went to a third set but was ultimately suspended.
The championship match between No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 7 UCLA will be held on Monday at noon PT in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. For more information, head to the GoHuskies.com ITA website.
