Huskies Sweep Redhawks, 7-0
February 24, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Washington men's tennis turned in a dominating performance in their third sweep of the season, defeating Seattle University 7-0 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Saturday.
Washington improved to 7-4 on the season while Seattle dropped to 5-5. The Dawgs had previously swept both Pepperdine and Eastern Washington earlier this season.
In doubles action, Kawiak Lam and Enzo Sommer traded games throughout the match on court one with Trenton Nield and Colton Weeldreyer, before finally being able to pull away and come up with the 6-4 victory. At No. 3 doubles, Alexis Alvarez and Jake Douglas dropped the first game and then never looked back, finding their rhythm and cruising to a 6-2 victory. Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart found themselves staring down 1 game to 4 early before clawing their way back to tie it up 5 games apiece. They closed out the final two games to win 7-5, completing a sweep of the doubles sets for UW.
Washington dominated in the singles matches as well. Sommer's powerful serves proved too much for his opponent as he rolled through his match. Alvarez also turned in a very impressive match, winning both sets 6-0. Stewart and Douglas had little trouble in their matches as well, never in danger of dropping a set to their opponents.
Foley got out to a quick start in set one before Emilio Monroy battled back to make things close. Foley regrouped, however, closing out his first set 6-3 before dominating his second 6-2 and walking away with a match victory.
On court five, long rallies were the norm as Joao Barra and Michael Schoettler threw everything they had at each other in every point. Schoettler got out to an early lead, but Barra managed to take set one, 6-3. Barra built off his momentum from the end of set one, taking set two and the match with a convincing score of 6-2.
Next week Washington takes on Minnesota Friday night at 5 p.m. PT. Live scoring and streaming can be found on the men's tennis schedule page.
